Histopathology

Histopathology

Not many outside the medical profession know what histopathology is or what a histopathologist does. Yet, few surgical decisions - especially on cancer and related disorders would be possible without histopathology. Histopathology and cytopathology diagnose problems / diseases in tissues. This is far removed from the quantitative world of clinical chemistry and haematology. In this numberless world, it is the subtleties of the shades of grey that must be interpreted. Answering questions such as "Doctor do I have cancer?", and "Will my disease respond to treatment?", fall under the purview of a histopathologist's responsibilities. Here is where science meets the art of medicine and may even have to bow to it. The skill of the histopathologist is not easily acquired. It is honed and tempered by long years in the field. Histopathologists are therefore the rara avis of the pathology world.

Our Team

The Piramal Diagnostics group in its mission for excellence in pathology, recognized the need for good histopathology and cytopathology services. Towards this goal it has established a modern histopathology laboratory fully equipped to provide high quality histopathology and cytopathology services. These services will answer diagnostic and therapeutic questions in surgical pathology in a timely and comprehensive manner. The laboratory is accredited by  NABL &  CAP (College of American Pathologists).

The centre is headed by Dr. Anita M. Borges, M.D. FRC Path, a surgical pathologist of repute who has spent 25 years as a cancer pathologist in the UK, USA and in India. She is ably supported by Dr.Jay Mehta, M.D., trained at Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai and Dr.K Lakshminarayanan, Ph.D. who has managed the histopathology laboratories of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum.

Tests Available

The centre offers routine histopathology and cytopathology services, including Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and screening tests for cancer. Immunohistochemistry for all routine diagnostic and predictive markers is currently available. Additionally, the centre offers esoteric tests at the cutting edge of technology and expertise, such as molecular genetic markers of diagnostic and therapeutic value.

The Piramal Diagnostic services’ Histopathology Centre is truly committed to excellence. This is its raison d etre and its promise.
